Whilst in Port Douglas or Cairns you will
experience the Reef Rainforest, but...are you aware that just
a short drive from your accommodation and from 500
to more than 1000 metres above sea level, there are another two
natural wonders?
The Great Australian Outback
The Amazing Atherton Tablelands
|
Experience the mist enshrouded waterfalls,
Crater Lakes and Gorges of this magical part of Tropical
North Queensland. Alternatively picture yourself having
lunch on the side of a "Bush Billabong" after trekking the
vastness of Outback Australia, stopping to see natural wonders
such as the magnificent Mt Mulligan Escarpment along
the way.
|
 |
 |
Your days will be full of adventure, in contrast
your evenings and nights will be spent in luxury. Imagine
staying at a lovingly restored, 120 year old Goldmine with authentic
chambers, or as a guest at one of a range of unique lodges and
cabins, each offering 4-5 star accommodations and facilities of
a superior level.
|
For those of you who have a particular interest
in our native Australian wildlife, special arrangements
can be made for wildlife treks and bird watching; under
the right conditions it is possible to adventure in to the
bush after dark, to see the rainforest creatures in their
natural habitat. Discover the Wet Tropics.
|
 |
 |
At certain locations angling expeditions can be
arranged. Our local fish, the Barramundi, has a reputation second-to-none,
not only as a fighter, catches of over 35 kilo’s have been recorded
to date (including the World Record), but as good Aussie tucker.
There are packages available to let you experience
this remarkable, yet undiscovered region of Tropical Far North
Queensland.
Day 1
 |
 |
Leave Port Douglas or Cairns around 9 am
bound for Tyrconnell Gold Mine. On the way we will visit
'The Golden Drop Mango Winery', tastings are encouraged,
then on to see our local Coffee Plantations and Tropical
Fruit Farms where you can not only look, but also taste.
|
Arrive at Tyrconnell, in the mid afternoon. There
will be time to enjoy a tour of this fascinating Mine, now having
been restored to its former glory of 1880, before retiring to
your quarters to prepare for dinner with your hosts.
Day 2
 |
 |
Up with the sun and after a good hearty
breakfast, you’re on your way to the magnificent Mt Mulligan
Escarpment, (10 times the size of Uluru). Learn about the
day in 1921 when 100 miners lost their lives, move among
the relics, feel the history of what was once a thriving
Community.
|
Onward to Irvinebank & Herberton - Historic
Outback towns that thrived from 1880 to 1920 followed by a traditional
Outback Pub or Bush Billabong for lunch. By the way, don’t miss
a visit to the Loudon House Museum in Irvinebank.
We make our way across the lush, unspoiled and
scenic Southern Atherton Tablelands to rendezvous with your hosts
for the night. As guests of the local community you will be offered
a selection of 4 or 5 star accommodation from ATAG. Dinner is
your choice, with complimentary transfer to and from a local restaurant.
Day 3
 |
 |
Up a little later than usual today, a quiet
breakfast then a short journey to Lake Barrine to see Mother
Nature at her most wondrous and ponder how it all came about
over a pot of tea at the famous Tea House.
|
There will be an opportunity to stop off at the
2-storey hide for bird watching at Hasties Swamp and then Hallorans
Hill environmental lookout on the edge of an extinct volcano before
descending the Great Dividing Range to sea level for a late lunch
on the Coast.
The 'Swagman’s Trail' has proven to be the most
popular way to see the difference between 'Real Outback Australia'
and the lush, tropical, scenic Atherton Tablelands. Tour director,
John Donovan (a typical 'true blue Aussie') is able to tailor
the tours to meet any special interests.
There is a choice of Guest House, Houses or Cabins
for your accommodation. These properties are situated in some
of the most stunning locations on the Tablelands overlooking lakes,
mountains or even in the heart of our Rainforest. All are members
of ATAG (Atherton Tablelands Accommodation Group).
