The City Of Darwin

Unlike the barren and dusty land of Northern Territory, Darwin is a modern and lively city. Darwin is a cosmopolitan city and the perfect place to relax before travelling on.

Darwin Street
The city was founded in 1869, and although development had previously been slow, it rapidly grew from 1871 on the discovery of gold at Pine Creek. However, development slowed again due to extreme climate and cyclones. It also had poor contact with the other cities around Australia, until the road to Alice Springs was surfaced

The main industries in Darwin are mining and administration. Darwin is also the doorway to the Northern areas. The city is fairly small, situated on the peninsula . The main highway leading through the city is Stuart Highway, which heads around the city, leading south. Although the city extends about 15km to the north and east, the main centre only extends about 2-3 blocks from the transit centre or mall. Darwin also hosts a number of cycle tracks linking the various places, making an enjoyable way of getting around.
  Darwin

Darwin is a great place for residents and tourists alike, offering loads of tourist accommodation. Including the many Darwin Hostels, Darwin Hotels, bed and breakfasts and campsites. Most of the hostels are situated around Mitchell Street, although if you want to move away from the city there are also a few places for you to choose from. Many of the hotels are along the Esplanade, with motels and campsites being both in and around the city.
