Caravanning to nowhere

In the sixties mum and dad bought a lovely old colorbond caravan. We all thought we were the ants pants. Off down to the seaside for one week. Geelong. Which was around one hours drive. We started packing a week before the departure. The caravan didn't have a fridge, although it did have electricity. So mum went and bought an ice chest. That's exactly what it was. If anyone doesn't know, it is like a little wooden cupboard that you put a large block of ice in, so you keep your food cold. The iceman would come around the caravan park every morning to sell the ice.

We also had our deck chairs and fold up chairs as they weren't equipped in the caravan. Only four beds and a cooker. We also had a card table. etc etc etc. My sister and I packed every board game imaginable. Tennis racquets, balls, etc. Don't ask me how long we thought we were going for.

The morning had arrived for our departure. The neighbour next door had just got home from night shift and waved us off. This was 4 am in the morning. We started off down the road. My father wanted to go past his place of work. All his mates were going to be out on the landing at the dairy to wave us off. We tooted the horn as we went past. Turned the corner and the caravan started to sway. All the back windows started to pop open. And dad couldn't handle the car. He had no idea that he might have had to balance everything in the caravan so it would drive smoothly.

Mum panicked and told dad to turn back. But he didn't want to go past his mates again, so we went the long way around back home, drove into the drive, got straight into bed. Later in the afternoon our neighbour next door got up from his sleep from night shift and felt a bit confused. He saw us drive away and he thought he'd slept for a week. True story.
