We had been travelling in the Australian Outback for 9 days. From Quorn to Quilpie to Yowah and we were heading home. Jack our 4 year old son had not been happy about our camping adventure from the start.
He had made this known by refusing to do number 2's anywhere. Not in the bush, not in public toilets, nor in our friends 'outdoor dunny' on their station Yankininna. By the time we reached Quilpie things were at crisis point. Quilpie hospital broke the 'drought with an enema and from then on he relented but was 'still not happy Jan'.
So when we said "we're heading home today", Jack got excited and said "Yay we are going to be home tonight".
Bad luck, we explained to Jack that Yowah was too far away from Quorn to make it in one day. "No it's not!" He exclaimed "you can do it in a day!"
We didn't argue, what's the point? We left Yowah at 7.30am and got to Tippaburra NSW by 2.30 pm. We had late lunch and then decided to make Broken Hill our overnight stop.
That was our biggest mistake. We felt like Mary and Joseph cause there was no room at the Inn, or the caravan park, or the YMCA.
With the Kids asleep and neither of us wanting to sleep on the side of the road we decided to tag team it home. We made it by 2 am. 13.5 hours but we did it.
Dad got Jack out of the car in the dark and as our little boy sleepily opened his eyes Dad said "Do you know where we are"?
"Yes Home Dad and I told you, you could do it in a day". What did he know that we didn't?
