Ok well I will be honest, i dont know terrible lot about GPS systems but i do know that the TomTom RIDER v2 GPS system worked great for me. RRP is around 1000 to 1200 and it did everything i needed it to while i was travelling. Give it a go.

I really recommend tomtom, they have really great products and the response and processing times are pretty good in their budget products too.

All you need is to get a rental car or a recreational vehicle that has GPS system installed and you do not have to buy one when arriving in australia. you may also go to harvey norman electronic store and thee do sell them for 100 to 400 australian dollars. when bringing a GPS to australia you must declare your GPS. make sure your GPS does global and advanced technology in australia has improved lately. the country uses nbn ground and satellite internet technology so your laptop can give you directions too. directional internet website www.whereis.com.au covers all of australia.
