Best time to travel around Australia

Hi Guys, we are planning a family trip around Australia next year and are flexible with the times we go. We have an on road caravan so we need to be cautious about weather conditions.

We will be starting from Melbourne and are looking for advice on the best time to leave heading across to Perth then up the west coast to Darwin.

The advice I’m look to get on this forum for example is "Don’t start to head up the west coast until at least April 1st as the wet season would have past" or “Don’t get to the Northern Territory before June as the weather is unpleasant".

Any information that travellers can share like the above examples would be beneficial.

Thanks you in advance.

We are looking at doing a trip for 5 months starting in May next year
We have land cruiser and off road van so should be able to get to most places
As I have read a fair few comments that you should head north in the winter
We are keen to try the opposite even though it may be a bit cooler
We are planning to leave Gold Coast in May head across to Alice springs than head down to SA in June then travel across the great ocean road to Melbourne July and tassie in August
Hoping to hear from anyone that has done this trip or spent time in the areas at the months we were planning on any comments positive or negative are most welcome
Cheers Mick

Hi to all previous and future travellers. We are planning a 12 month or more trip around Aus in our caravan. We will be starting off from Geraldton early January 2014 and we would appreciate any input that previous travellers can give us. This is our dream and any help we would be appreciative of.....which way should we go clockwise or anti clockwise ?

We are planning to do a 6 month trip starting July 2012 with two kids, leaving from Brisbane, going anti-clockwise. The main advice I have read off all the googling I've done is to make sure you do the top end during Winter and be down south by Summer. October is the start of the hot and wet season up north, so we're planning to be travelling South from Broome by late September.

Everything I've read also suggests going anti-clockwise so you're travelling with (not against) the prevailing winds.

Hi, We are doing the same sometime next year and would appreciate to get any tips you may get from others who have done this before. We are planning on heading north and going around clockwise for 4-5 months.

Wouldnt mind knowing how much it would cost. We are in a 2006 Landcruiser and towing a caravan. Thanks heaps Donna
