Hi Everyone,
I'm 18 years old and from Ireland. I'd like to travel to Australia between September-December later this year. I've never done a backpack holiday before!! I am curious about the following:
*How much money would I need? Ideally we hope to be there for 3weeks-1month maybe.
*What is the legal age in Australia? In Ireland it's 18.
*Any particular places that we should check out?
*Any cheap but fair accomdation?
Thanks all.

Hi,
I'm situated in North Perth, Australia, so lets try and answer your questions....
Money, well i've never done the backpacking part but with hotel accommodation, if you budget on $200.00 per day you should be fine so if its at hostels it's going to be cheaper! That figure includes meals.
Legal age is the same.
Definately check out all the state if you can, it's far apart so it may take some time! WA is good for relaxation, it has great sights in the Kimberleys and Broome. Brisbane has the Great Barrier Reef and great beaches. Sydney is fast and buzzing with the bridge and opera house and Tas has snow. Between the states there are desert, tropics and snow - should be able to keep you entertained...
Prices for everything here is going to be cheaper than in Ireland, the Euro is stronger than the Australian Dollar and you should have no troubles finding decent accommodation, just check out the tourist information places.
Hope it helps!
PS - the taxis here are metered, you do not need to discuss a price beforehand. There is a 10% GST tax included in all of our prices and there is no tipping required for services

Hi there,
September to December, even though technically our summer starts in November, is actually a really good time to come. The seasons seem to be moving forward a lot so the hottest months would be January through to February/March.
I've lived around a lot of parts of Australia and if I had just a few months to see it, I'd definately head up the east coast from Sydney right up to Port Douglas in North QLD. It seems to be a pretty popular backpacker trail and you'll never be short of friends to have drinks with and go to the beach etc. Or, if you wanted to do the less travelled route, you might want to do the Northern Territory, but by December it will well into the tropical season and it can be muggy and humid plus threat of cyclones and electrical storms (which some people think is actually the best part of living there!) Up in the N.T you have the crocs and Kakadu national park, great fishing and it is an amazing experience. OR another great holiday adventure would be to start in Perth, Western Australia (I think you can fly directly to Perth via international) W.A has beautiful, non-commercial beaches and coastline and is truly gorgeous. The surf is excellent and in those months you are travelling the weather would be lovely. If I was 18 again (haha) I would definately love to backpack up the coast, either from Sydney or Perth. One thing I wouldn't do though is the really long trips where you would be on a bus or a plane for hours. Don't do the perth to Sydney trip by train!!! Or Perth to Broome or Broome to Darwin to Brisbane to Darwin! Lots of backpackers team up and buy a van or something and do it that way but if you've only got a short time, then the more popular destinations are the way to go. Don't forget plenty of sunscreen in this country - we have really strong sunshine that burns - and we are not exactly a cheap place to buy food etc in restaurants, so stick to the supermarkets and noodle shops. Happy planning! Mel.
