There are two ski resorts situated in Tasmania, Ben Lomond and Mount Mawson. Ben Lomond ski resort is the premier ski resort of the two; it is located in the Ben Lomond National Park and is approximately one hour from Launceston and three hours from Hobart. Mount Mawson is located within the Mount Field National Park and is around a 90 minute drive from Hobart. Both ski resorts ski season starts around early July and closes late September.
The Ben Lomond National Park has stunning scenery, diverse wildlife and covers some 16,527 hectares. It also has Tasmania's second-highest peak which is 1,572 metres above sea level. The ski village is set at the foot of the ski slopes which are popular for cross-country skiers and snowboarders. There are three T-Bars and four Poma lifts at Ben Lomond Ski resort which helps provide affordable skiing for beginner to intermediate skiers.
The Mount Mawson skiing areas are at an altitude of about 1250m and generally have reasonable consistent snow cover. The Mount Mawson ski resort is great beginners, intermediates and expert snow enthusiasts. There are three 'nutcracker' rope tows and one small surface lift in the beginner's area. It is also a popular spot for cross-country skiing as it has high-level routes around tarns to huts.
