Strahan

Strahan was once a busy port, servicing the exportation of copper, gold, lead, silver and timber. However, it took a while for a settlement to be built as the dangerous seas and entrance to Macquarie Harbour, where the town is situated, put off sailors to the western coast. Macquarie Harbour is also the home to Sarah Island which due to its dangerous seas, homed many convicts and created a timber workhouse.

The town is extremely pretty, and is pleasant just to walk around. There are a number of fantastic buildings with outstanding architecture that are worth seeing. However, there is also a selection of things to do including walking to the spectacular Hogarth Falls, relaxing on Ocean Beach, or joining one of the many tours around Strahan. You can go jet boat riding, as well as join a tour in a seaplane, although the most popular tours have to be one of the Gordon River Cruises. On these you get to see fantastic rainforest, the dangerous Hells Gates, as well as the convict prison on Sarah Island.

There are several places to eat out around the town, and a number of places to stay. It is usually best to book in advance, as places tend to get extremely busy in the summer and are closed in the winter.
