Mintaro Slate Quarries

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations, Mining and Industry

Mintaro Slate Quarries - Clare Valley, South AustraliaSlate has been quarried in Mintaro since the mid 1860s and was extensively used in the old colonial homes and public buildings of Mintaro.

Acknowledged as one of the best slates in the world, some aspects of production have remained unchanged since the 1860s.

Today, efficiency in handling and cutting slate has been increased with the addition of modern mobile processing equipment.

Slate is quarried for domestic and commercial use including flooring, fireplaces and bench tops, patios, paths, gardens and verandas, and is well-known internationally for its use in billiard tables.

Visitors may collect information packs from the production site (turn right at the quarry gates into the car park).

No access beyond the car park is permitted.

Due to occupational health and safety regulations we are unable to allow the public free access to the quarry site and processing plant.

Group or club visits may be arranged by appointment only, depending on production restraints.
