Historical Sites and Heritage Locations, Landmarks and Buildings, Mining and Industry
The Wheal Hughes Copper Mine at Moonta is both an exciting adventure and an insight into the lives of the Cornish miners who worked the great copper mines in the 1800s.
Visitors put on boots, hard hats and helmet lights and descend to a depth of 55 metres into the massive underground mine chambers.
Here they will see the multicoloured veins of ore running through the earth and learn how it was once mined and brought to the surface.
Bookings must be made at the Visitor Information Centre and visitors must be at the mine 15 minutes prior to the tour start time.
Special packages with other National Trust Mining Heritage sites can be pre-booked.
A reasonable degree of physical fitness is required to tour the mine and the tour is not available to children under six years of age.
School groups and bus tours are welcome by prior arrangement.
Please note: This attraction is currently closed for maintenance. It is anticipated to re-open by December 2011. Please contact the Moonta Tourist Office on (08) 8825 1891 for further information.
