Fossil Downs Homestead

Overview

Those fortunate enough to see the Fossil Downs Homestead will marvel at the determination that built this glorious two storey mansion in this difficult hard country.

Built by W.N.M. (Bill) MacDonald, nephew of Williek, one of the leaders of the Great Cattle Drive.

The foundations were laid on 1st January 1939.

Timber was milled from Leichardt Pine, Blackheart, and native fig logs, cut on fossil, above Geikie Gorge and haulded in by donkey teams.

Cement blocks were made with Margaret River Sand, stone paving from the Oscars and the Grecian Pillors were cast on site using hand made moulds.

All other supplies came via ship to Derby, thence 200 miles (320 kilometres) over dirt and gravel tracks accessible only in the dry season, seven to eight months a year.

Bill MacDonald's achievement in this building alone, must surely mark with that of his Uncle Willie.

A third generation MacDonald of the original pioneering family is still running this family station.
