The Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mount Coot-tha are Queensland's premier subtropical botanic gardens. These 52 hectare gardens are situated seven kilometres from the city centre, and offer a variety of environments and natural wildlife.

In 1978, the Brisbane City Council opened Queensland's first planetarium. The Planetarium is named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, a Governor of New South Wales in the 1820s.
