infoAugathella Info

Augathella with its slogan 'Home of the Meat Ant' is a centre for the graziers of the area. The primary industries are sheep, cattle, kangaroos and timber. Augathella is situated at the junction of the Landsborough Highway and the road from Morven.

Augathella was originally known as Burenda Township and then Ellengowan, then Augathella. The town gets its name from an Aboriginal word meaning 'waterhole' - relating to the Warrego River. Augathella's history is linked intrinsically with the large merino sheep holdings boasting five shearing teams in the height of the wool boom. Many of these stations have now diversified into cattle.

More than a century ago, Augathella was a stop for bullock teams. The drivers would use the banks of the Warrego River, which runs through Augathella, as a resting spot on their long journeys through the Outback. These days there is a park and picnic area next to the river where you can stop and relax.

The town has the notoriety of being the base from which the bushranging Kenniff brothers operated. By the way, the local rugby league team is know as "The Mighty Meat Ants" named after the huge meat eating ants said to be capable of carrying 100 times their own weight.
