Bourke is situated alongside the Darling River and the Mitchell highway, and used to be a major river port. There are some interesting buildings around the town and some beautiful mountains to visit nearby.

Established in 1861, Bourke is located roughly 770km from Sydney, 930km from Brisbane, 1000km from Melbourne and 1125km from Adelaide.

Mulga CreekMount Oxley is very attractive as is Mount Gunderbook with its springtime wildflowers and Aboriginal cave art. Another nearby Aboriginal site is at Brewarrina which means 'good fishing'. There are Fisheries around here which were traps used by the Ngemba Aboriginal people to catch fish.

In Bourke and the surrounding area, there is a range of accommodation and facilities including four comfortable air conditioned motels, five hotels and three caravan parks. The RSL, the Bowling club and the Port of Bourke Hotel, they can all be accessed from Dubbo by bus several times a week.
