Buchan is a rural town situated close to the pretty Snowy Mountains near the amazing Snowy River National Park. Located approximately 75 kilometres from Bairnsdale and 350 kilometres from Melbourne, Buchan is the perfect place from which to explore the Buchan Caves Reserve. There are tours of Fairy Cave and Royal Cave at the Buchan Caves Reserve, and an interesting visitors' interpretation centre. The reserve also features picnic spots, walking tracks, a camping ground, plus a variety of flora and fauna.

The Buchan Gallery and Buchan Heritage Group have developed a wonderful tour around the township, allowing you to learn about the history of the buildings, river and people. Once you travel out of town, the area surrounding Buchan offers both spectacular scenery and a wide range of outdoor activities such as fishing, bushwalking, bird watching, trail riding, kayaking, white water rafting, four-wheel driving and horse riding. Fishing is popular along both the Buchan River and Timbara River, whilst the Snowy River offers fantastic opportunities for canoeing and white water rafting.

Buchan is the ideal base to explore the Snowy River National Park. The main camping areas and facilities are situated at MacKillop's Bridge, although there are also several bush camping spots and hostel accommodation. From MacKillop's Bridge are several walking trails including the magnificent Silver Mine Walking Track.

There are some fabulous lookouts along the track at Little River Falls and Little River Gorge. Numerous activities are also popular within the park including abseiling, canoeing and caving. Several activity packages within the Snowy River National Park are available.
