Chasing Convicts Port Arthur Day Tour
A convict’s escape made in a washing tub, cannibalism, pirates & buried treasure….The secrets of these stories and more will be shared with you today as your tour guide brings to life the misadventures, crimes, punishments and exciting escape attempts from Tasmania’s convict past.
We depart Hobart and travel to the Tasman Peninsula, stopping in Dunalley and learn about the Devil Proof Fence before continuing to Pirate’s Bay Lookout. Discover the rich history of this area with everything from geology and Australia’s highest sea cliffs to pirates and bushrangers.
The open-air, World Heritage listed site of Port Arthur offers a fascinating insight into Tasmania’s convict past. History comes to life with the amazing walking tour, boat cruise and exploration of
over 35 buildings and gardens. All the stories: funny, gruesome and bizarre, are yours to enjoy. Steer clear of the leg shackles and don’t let your parents leave you in the solitary cells! You’ll leave Port Arthur with tired legs and full cameras, but with the relief that you DO get to leave!
You will also visit the unique Tessellated Pavement, one of Tasmania’s geological wonders, at low tide. Get your “Explorer kit” out as we investigate the nooks and crannies of the rock pools and discover the wonderful world of the crabs, sponges, anemones, sea stars and many more fascinating creatures.
We stop in for a short visit at the Federation Chocolate Factory where you can enjoy free samples of the local flavours on offer, before returning into Hobart around 5.00pm.
