Travelling around OZ with older kids

we are a family of four in the planning stages of a trip around Australia. My biggest concern is the schooling of my soon to be 13 yr old who will be missing year 8 whilst we are travelling. Has anyone homeschooled teenagers on the road? I have heard that 'Distance Education' takes a up to 5hrs a day which kind of defeats the purpose of going. Has anyone had any sucess with other methods?
