Working in Perth

Hello, me and a friend are working in Perth for about 6 months coming up in mid august and then we plan on traveling for 2 or three months and then heading over to NZ for a couple weeks. I was wondering if in such a small amount of time if we should look at booking tours to see austrialia or if it is a better idea to buy a car and travel. We were looking at ozxposure and it looks like alot of fun but i'm not sure what it would be like and if it is smarter to go by ourselves.
