Wentworth Area

The Murray and Darling Rivers meet at the historic port of Wentworth. Aboriginal history dates back thousands of years, Captain Charles Sturt arrived in 1830, settlement and grazing began in the 1840s and Wentworth was the nucleus of river trade between New South Wales, Victoria & South Australia.

Wentworth retains a 'historic' atmosphere with well maintained buildings, including the Old Wentworth Gaol, Churches, Post Office, and Bank buildings. The two rivers provide precious water for agriculture, domestic supply and fishing, skiing, bushwalking and birdwatching. All towns, Wentworth, Dareton, Buronga, Gol Gol & Pooncarie, boast magnificent river frontage.

The Wentworth Shire is a unique holiday destination with: the Perry Sandhills (ancient, red sand dunes-great family fun); eco-cultural tours to Mungo National Park (World Heritage listed); 4WD bike tours; river cruises; industry showcases such as a fishery, citrus orchard, and wineries (tasting & sales, and one with a boutique restaurant); arts, crafts and antiques; the internationally recognised Australian Inland Botanic Gardens (with its central rose garden); and the city of Mildura across the Murray.

Accommodation options in the Wentworth Area include motels, houseboats, caravan parks, units/villas, backpacker hotel, B&B's, and farm stays. Clubs and hotels provide dining, entertainment, and there are excellent sporting facilities for golf, lawn bowls and tennis.
