The township and nearby range was named after John Charles Darke who was speared in 1844 whilst on an exploratory trip. His grave is located on the western side of the Darke Range. Two other landmarks in close proximity are Caralue Bluff and Carappee Conservation Park, with Carappee Hill being the highest point - 495 metres above sea level on Eyre Peninsula.

Hambidge Wilderness Area and Darke Range conservation parks are also nearby, making Darke Peak an ideal spot to rest between bush walking and bird watching.
