In 1847 Johann Christian Henschke settled on this piece of land in Krondorf. He and his wife raised their family and lived off the land in the same way their ancestors had for generations.
He kept the farm accounts in a little notebook tucked away in the rafters of the outbuilding where he did blacksmithing in winter evenings.
Nearly 150 years later his great-great-grand daughter Ingrid found the notebook. Together with her husband Richard and their two daughters Ilona and Tullia they opened Krondorf Road Cafe in homage to the early settlers.
Krondorf Road Cafe is the only cafe in the Barossa Valley to specialize in the traditional food of the Barossa settlers.
Barossa food is largely a result of the very thrifty Prussian, Wendish (Sorbian) and English settlers adapting their original recipes to the Mediterranean climate, which allowed them to grow fresh produce all year. They also incorporated ingredients they brought with them from the ports of call on their voyage to Australia, creating dishes unique to the Barossa Valley!
Location
Krondorf Road Cafe is located in Tanunda, South Australia.
