Think of Young and you think straight away of cherries. That's natural enough for a town that is renown for this bright red little fruit. The cherry harvest starts approximately in the first week of November and continues through to the New Year, and brings hundreds of people to town to pick and to pack the fruit.
Young is proud to be known as: 'The Cherry Capital of Australia'. With over 400 hectares of vineyards planted throughout the Shires of Young, Harden and Boorowa, the emerging premium wine growing area known as 'Hilltops' Wine Region has developed.
Qualities of this region are the unique soils, reliable rainfall and a cool climate, helping in the development of flavours for which the wines of the region are renown. A rich agricultural area with fields of various crops planted. A spectacular picture can be seen in springtime when hectares of mustard are in bloom.
A variety of fruit is grown in the area which are sold to markets on a daily basis. In addition to that, many are preserved, pickled and packaged into attractive jars and bottles for export to other countries and the domestic and international tourist market.
