My parents had decided to visit us in Townsville, from Brisbane, and so we decided to go over to Magnetic Island. There would be seven of us - my parents, my husband, my three children aged between 10 - 15, and myself. The day turned out to be full of fun and laughs. Whilst waiting for the ferry, my father pointed to the water of Ross Creek, and said excitedly, "I just saw a sole fish!"
Well, that had us all looking but we failed to see any fish in the brackish water until I realized my father was pointing to a shoe floating upside down.
At the end of the day, we were in Point Lookout and waiting to catch a bus to return home. My mother saw one and bossily ordered us to get on. There were other passengers also getting on. Once the bus was full the driver got on followed by a woman with a clipboard. The bus took off whilst the woman went around counting heads. Suddenly my mother realized her mistake, but told us sternly not to say anything - we had got on a tourist bus not one of the buses you normally catch, and pay a fare. The woman finished counting, and we could not help but burst out laughing because the count must have been right as she did not bat an eyelid, and yet we were the only group with kids! - we caught a bus for free back to the ferry but some seven poor tourists must have been left behind. Did I feel guilty - not at the time, it was just too hilarious.
