Longreach holds numerous claims to fame. Firstly it was the base for the Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Service (otherwise known as Qantas), and secondly it is now famous for its wonderful Stockmans Hall of Fame and Outback Heritage Centre which features displays on life in the outback and pioneers of the past.
You can find out further information about the areas history at both the Powerhouse Museum, and the Qantas Founders Outback Museum which is set within Qantas' original hangar at Longreach Airport. You can also join cruises along the pretty Thomson River which is pleasant to do.
There are several places to stay around the town, including camping, lodges, and pub accommodation. The pubs also serve food, as do many of the cafes and restaurants along Eagle Street.
