Gunning is the centre of "The Shire of Small Villages", settled in 1820s. It is an old transport and wool growing centre offering heritage experiences with a peaceful, friendly rural atmosphere. Located 1 kilometre from the Hume Highway just over 2 hours from Sydney and 45 minutes north of Canberra.
Gunning was originally a coach stop, and service centre for the surrounding farms mainly growing Merino sheep. It had a police station and court house, post office, and school.
