Morpeth

In the heart of Hunter River Country, just a few kilometres from Maitland is the historic village of Morpeth. Classified by the National Trust, Morpeth was established in 1821 on the banks of the Hunter River. It was once a thriving river port for ships taking goods around Australia and the world. Visitors can meander through the village with a self-guided heritage walk brochure and look at the beautiful sandstone buildings and pathways.

There are numerous cafes, restaurants, galleries, curio and antique stores, which are ever popular with visitors throughout the year. There is also a post office, bakery, pharmacy and newsagent. Morpeth Courthouse Museum offers an historical perspective of life in the district. Relax on the riverbank by the old wooden bridge, or sip an ale in a friendly country pub.

Bed and breakfast accommodation is available in the village and surrounding rural countryside. A number of special events are held annually in Morpeth including the Fiery Food Festival, Honey Festival, Weird and Wonderful Novelty Teapot Festival and the Morpeth Jazz Festival.
