Surrounded by the rugged mountains of the Wollemi National Park and foothill of the grand Barrington High Country, the Muswellbrook area is steeped in history and heritage of bushrangers, gold mining, aristocratic landed gentry and convict settlement.

Originally opened up to European settlement in the early 1820s, this rich part of the Hunter Valley has undergone a series of phases from those early days to its present vibrant economy based on quality dairying, beef production, olive plantations, cerial crops and world famous wine production. Coal mining and Power Generation add zest to the local economy, providing export income and electricity that drives our industry, agriculture and our communities, our homes and businesses.

With the first planting's of grapes at Rosemount, near Denman in the 1860s, the Upper Hunter boasts some of the finest wines produced in Australia with Callatoota Estate, James Estate, the famous Rosement Estate, Ingelwood Two Rivers, Arrowfield, Bell's Lane and Yarraman Road Estate providing a unique experience for both the novice and connoisseur alike. Most wineries are open for tasting over weekends with many open 7 days a week.

Magnificent thoroughbred horse studs sit in the valley floor along the fertile Hunter River flats, producing the finest bloodstock in the world. Coolmore and Woodlands Studs near Denman and the historic Widden Stud nestled within the bronzed sandstone cliffs of the Widden Valley being just a few of these Five-Star breeding establishments.

There's always plenty to do and lots of time to do it in the Muswellbrook and the Upper Hunter. There are huge Golden Perch and Bass from Lake Glenbawn, you can trout in the high country, Golf, Bowls, Bushwalking, Art Galleries, eateries with yummy country cooking and festival, country shows and rodeos - all year round.
