Alluval gold was first found in the tributaries of the Turon River in the early 1850s. Hill End was a bustling gold mining town during the gold rush of the 1870s.
One of the most remarkable things about Hill End now is the virtual lack of development since the gold rush. Almost all of the buildings date back to the boom years around 1872. The village currently offers a general store, hotel, post office, police station, pub, and a variety accommodation.
Part of the fun of Hill End is getting there, the Bridle Track, which is mainly dirt and may be closed during inclement weather, is an adventurous and scenic way. Many reserves are located along the Bridle Track on route to Hill End where you can go picnicking, fishing, swimming, casual camping and fossick for gold. Prospecting tools and mining licence obtained from General Store.
