Mt Hotham is located within the Bogong National Park and offers great skiing. Mt Hotham offers skiing for mainly intermediate and advanced skiers, however, beginner ski areas are present. The resort is unique, with the village being close to the summit of the mountain. Although the nightlife isn't great, it is perfect if you are seriously into skiing.
There are some great cross country trails leading to Mt Feathertop, as well as across to Falls Creek. During the summer these trails are also popular amongst walkers and hikers.
Other popular activities during the Summer months, or when snow isn't present, include four wheel driving. There are a number of unsealed roads ideal for four wheel driving, including Dargo Road. Fishing is also popular, especially for Trout, with guided fishing tours available. The Mitta Mitta and Cobungra rivers are two popular locations for fishing. Abseiling and rock climbing is also possible, again with guided trips available.
Another popular activity is cycling. The Great Alpine Road is promoted as the highest bitumen road in Australia and the views are fantastic, which make for an enjoyable journey. For the really keen cyclist this stretch of road enables you to take in the wondrous views at both a relaxing and challenging pace.
There is plenty of accommodation at Mt Hotham and a number of good restaurants. Campers are well catered for with several campsites in the area.
Trekset Snow Services offer bus transport to Mt Hotham during the winter from Melbourne, although you can also travel on the Helicopter Lift Link. If you choose to drive to Mt Hotham, make sure you check the road conditions before departing.
