South Bank follows the Brisbane River along the southern side of the city. The South Bank parkland offers fabulous and attractive walkways, and pretty views and scenery. There is often plenty of live entertainment and attractions throughout the day and evening.
South Bank is home to the Queensland Art Gallery, Queensland Performing Arts Centre, Opera Queensland, Queensland Theatre Company, Queensland Museum, and State Library of Queensland - all of which take pride of place along the bank of the Brisbane River - plus the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, and the Greater Union Hoyt's South Bank Cinemas.
Amongst South Bank's attractive parkland there is even its own man-made beach, making it a great place to relax. There are also a wide range of restaurants and cafes to choose from with al fresco dining overlooking the river. If you'd prefer to do your own cooking then there are a number of picnic and BBQ areas along the South Bank.
South Bank also hosts The South Bank Lifestyle Markets. The markets operate from Friday evening through to Sunday evening and feature a range of Australian arts, crafts, homewares and collectables. The markets are also home to a number of up-and-coming designers. With a distinctive Queensland character, the markets are an ideal place for buying gifts and souvenirs or simply strolling through and enjoying the ambience.
The South Bank Lifestyle Markets are held on Friday from 5:00pm - 10:00pm, Saturday from 10:00am - 5:00pm and Sunday from 9:00am - 5:00pm. There are also extended trading days during certain public holidays.
The South Bank Arbour is an award winning horticultural masterpiece that meanders through the parkland for close to a kilometre. Bougainvillea plants provide a canopy of magenta during the day with colourful mood lighting adding to the relaxing atmosphere in the evening. In addition, there are often festivals and performances during the summer.
